Hisense is launching a 9 CanvasTV as a cheaper rival to Samsung’s Frame

Hisense is launching the CanvasTV, a matte television designed to display artwork and photos, letting it blend in with the rest of your decor when not in use. If it sounds similar to The Frame by Samsung, that’s because it is — but the difference is that the CanvasTV’s starting price is several hundred dollars cheaper.

The CanvasTV is available in 55 and 65 inches, each costing $999 and $1,299, respectively. To compare, The Frame costs $1,499 for 55 inches and $1,999 for 65 inches. Like The Frame, Hisense’s CanvasTV offers a 4K QLED anti-glare display. It also comes with a 144Hz refresh rate, an RGB sensor for ambient light adaption, and multi-channel 2.0.2 surround sound.

The CanvasTV comes with preloaded works of art “spanning abstract, modern, and renaissance styles.” You can also switch between displaying artwork and personal photographs by hitting the “Art Mode” button on the remote. The TV has a motion sensor to detect people in the room, allowing it to turn off when no one is around.

While LG offers a “Gallery Mode” on some TVs to display artwork (and the ability to show off NFTs) and many other smart TV makers have tossed in various gallery apps, Hisense’s CanvasTV will be the cheapest option in the US if you must have one designed to use art to hide in plain sight — for now, at least.

Along with a wall mount, Hisense includes a teak frame with the CanvasTV, but you can swap it for an interchangeable white or walnut frame sold separately. The CanvasTV will be available for purchase this summer.

Update May 3rd, 1:56PM ET: Updated pricing information.
